Over the past two centuries, humankind has made enormous progress. People now live healthier, longer, more productive lives. They have more opportunities for attaining happiness and fulfillment than ever before. Yet, for more than half the people on this planet, life is no different than it was 5,000 years ago.
Much of the progress that characterizes modern life comes from technology, which in turn comes from the remarkable discoveries of modern science. But so does much of the deprivation and misery that also exists.
The good things that technology has to offer can only be gained at the expense of the bad ones if we choose and design it in a manner that puts people and planet before profits.
