The central issues of sustainable development are to eradicate poverty and regenerate the health of the environmental resource base.
The key intervention to achieve this is the creation of sustainable livelihoods on a very large scale. This is the basis of the Mission of Development Alternatives.
Sustainable livelihoods are jobs – but jobs that have four essential attributes.
They:
- Generate a good income, and therefore purchasing power
- Give meaning and dignity to the life of the worker
- Produce goods and services that first and foremost meet the basic needs of the local economy
- Recreate a healthy environment
